In this chapter we make some reflections on the evolving relationship between mankind and machines, with an eye to super-intelligent machines and the fast-approaching frontier of autonomous robots. Here, humankind encounters Another: finding itself mirrored and challenged as the mythical Pygmalion, it labors to work out a relational stance. We explore the dynamics of control and the danger of new forms of marginalization and enslavement, and suggest there is room for authentic relationship where both man and machine have acquired mastery. We discuss the problem of meaningful supervision and touch on its practical consequences on safety and on its enabling technologies.

摘要
