Huawei and Oppo are Chinese multinational firms in the digital technology industry, aiming to distribute their products extensively in the Southeast Asian market. Smartphones are among its most significant products. This research paper examines the significance of symbols in smartphone marketing and their perception among Malaysian consumers. A qualitative research approach was used for this research. Around 17 consumers were interviewed and asked about their impressions of Huawei and Oppo YouTube commercials. The researchers used a theoretical approach of semiotics, specifically drawing upon the contributions of Ferdinand de Saussure and Edmund Leach. It has been observed that Huawei and Oppo employ symbols and indicators that evoke a positive emotional response. The deliberate implementation of these components aims to enhance the appeal of Huawei and Oppo products among consumers in Malaysia. The researchers also observed that the smartphone companies needed to take into account the multi-ethnic nature of Malaysian society. Consequently, they employed symbols that would appeal to all Malaysians.
