Oakeshott’s manuscript, posthumously published and titled The Politics of Faith and the Politics of Scepticism, is a rather ambiguous work on the ambiguity of politicspoliticsambiguity of in our age. Politics today ranges between two types, i.e. the politics of faith and the politics of scepticism. Oakeshott’s manuscript was written in the age of totalitarian and managerial states and the rise of leftist egalitarian states in the West, when liberation rhetoric and the resulting dogmatism were connected to boundless political activities. These promises of the salvation of humankind were to result in a series of shipwrecks. In this situation, the ideal of limited government acquired new significance.
