Soil Health and Carbon Sequestration in Agricultural Systems Under Changing Climate

To maintain ecosystem services, mitigate climate change, and ensure food security, soil health and C stocking need to be integrated with sustainable agriculture systems. In this chapter, the complex link between carbon sequestration and soil health is addressed, focusing on the processes governing carbon storage in soil, i.e., humification and aggregation. The chapter studies the factors that influence these processes (such as compaction and erosion, use of organic fertilizers and organic amendments, use of green manure and crop rotation, and soil tillage and land managements) and so on. The chapter focuses on a wide range of integrated management practices that enhance soil health and promote carbon sequestration, such as agroforestry, application of organic amendments, cover crops and conservation tillage. It also focuses on the benefits and constraints of such approaches in different regions and farming systems, as well as presenting success stories. And look to making agricultural systems more resilient, productive and sustainable for a healthier planet and healthier future when we emphasize soil health and carbon sequestration. In sum, this chapter offers valuable insights into the opportunities for soil carbon sequestration in agricultural systems as a readily available means of climate change mitigation in the short term. The chapter also explores how framework conditions may facilitate or impede the implementation of carbon sequestration and soil health measures. It also covers policy and economic issues. It offers doable suggestions for advancing soil health and sequestering carbon in agricultural systems to farmers, legislators, and researchers. By incorporating soil health and carbon sequestration into agricultural practices, we can help reduce the effects of climate change, boost agricultural output, and ensure a sustainable food system.
