The “specialness” of our involvements in environmental organizations is shown to stem from their expressions of collective imperfect duty. More particularly, it is explained here that our involvement in environmental advocacy organizations (EAOs) stems from the pursuit of the communally useful reinforcements of relations of virtue. In elaboration of this theme, Rawls’ solution to the intergenerational problem is shown to come from our desire to propagate and act on the scientific evidence relevant for environmentally sustainable options. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation is presented here as an example of an EAO formed from relations of virtue, and that provides a rational scientific basis for restoring and preserving this important Bay.
