This chapter argues that the existence of the past allows us to evade the idea that everything we ever feel, think, see or do will eventually be erased—which otherwise could lead to a kind of vertigo or nihilism that would pose a problem in lived experience: “If everything will eventually go to nothing, there is no point in doing anything”.
