That the Past Still Exists Is a Comfort to Us When Faced with Death
摘要
This chapter argues that the existence of the past can alleviate the terror of death that haunts our lived experience. To this end, it is examined how the continued existence of the past contradicts the idea that, with death, loved ones are fully erased from existence. This way of thinking is also shown to be able to solve the ontological problem for the “continued bonds” approach in grief research. Further, the terror of our own death is somewhat less if we believe that cherished moments in the past will still exist after our death. Yet, it is shown that even if the past continues to exist, death remains an evil, because it entails a loss of possibilities of future moments.
