This chapter examines the board’s critical role in supervising AI governance capabilities to manage both opportunities and risks inherent in AI deployment. It is organized around three key areas. First, under Supervising Ethics, Data, Regulation, boards must ensure AI systems are ethically sound—mitigating bias, ensuring privacy, interpretability, and maintaining effective human oversight—while implementing robust AI governance frameworks that span in-house and vendor-sourced systems. Second, the chapter focuses on Supervising AI-impacted Cyber Resilience. Boards need to recognize cybersecurity as a strategic enterprise risk, adopting proactive resilience strategies and using tools like cyber scorecards to translate technical metrics into actionable insights that safeguard business continuity. Finally, Supervising AI Ecosystem Compliance addresses the challenges of interconnected AI systems. Boards are urged to manage ecosystem-wide risks, from cascading failures and amplified biases to data sovereignty and vendor management, ensuring that every partner and service provider meets strict regulatory and security standards.
