Renewable Energy Technologies (RETs) in India: Opportunities and Challenges from a Frugal Innovation Perspective
摘要
This research investigates the barriers, challenges, and facilitators influencing the scalability of frugal innovations within India’s renewable energy sector. A multi-stakeholder approach was employed, encompassing the viewpoints of government entities, private investors, and rural communities. The objective was to elucidate strategies for scaling frugal renewable energy solutions to enhance energy access and promote sustainability. The analysis revealed several impediments to the widespread adoption of frugal innovations, including financial constraints, regulatory complexities, technological limitations, and socio-cultural resistance. Conversely, the enabling factors encompassed governmental support, technological advancement, public-private partnerships, and novel financing mechanisms such as microfinance and pay-as-you-go models. The study yields recommendations for policymakers, private sector entities, and investors. These emphasize the necessity for regulatory simplification, financial innovation, and community engagement to surmount scaling barriers. The leveraging of public-private partnerships and targeted financing instruments is critical to ensure inclusivity and reach underserved populations. This research offers a holistic understanding of the scalability determinants of frugal innovations in India’s renewable energy landscape. It underscores the potential of frugal innovations in addressing energy access disparities, particularly in rural contexts, thereby aligning with India’s sustainability and developmental objectives.
