Interviewing Children and Adolescents
摘要
Integrating cultural and community psychology principles into the clinical interview creates space for a more expansive and contextualized understanding of the case. This chapter overviews fundamentals of clinical interviewing before delving into specific styles and techniques used to gather salient information for case conceptualization and intervention planning. We present a variety of global social-emotional measures that can be incorporated into the process to enrich understanding. With a focus on providing a ‘clinical toolbox’ of techniques, the interviewer is equipped to adjust their plans based on the referral question alongside the client’s developmental level, culture, and context. Additionally, we present tips for funneling the interview according to the assessment goals and emergent information to enlighten understanding and guide recommendations. The chapter concludes with some of the primary challenges that occur throughout an interview, offering practical suggestions for responding flexibly to guide the interview in a positive and productive manner. Building on cases introduced in the previous chapters, we illustrate how these principles and strategies can be adapted to effectively interview youth across ages, cultures, developmental stages, and assessment contexts.
