‘The contributions contained in this book, which I have been working on for many years, are mainly devoted to controversial problems of Marxism. We hope to bring some clarity here, or at least to give the reader food for thought, criticism and discussion’ (Varga [1964a], p. 103). This is how Eugen Varga began his last major work—Contributions to the Problems of the Political Economy of Capitalism. We had already referred to this work. With these Contributions, Varga once again made it clear what he was ultimately concerned with, i.e. political education—not in the sense of explaining (supposed) truths, but in the sense of helping to learn to critically acquire knowledge, to argue for insights and to orientate oneself in a complicated world, and to do this in a self-determined way, in order to be politically effective in the very present, namely in an emancipatory and solidary way, capable to contribute to developing forward-looking, progressive policies.
