Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a non-segmented, negative-sense, single-stranded, enveloped RNA virus belonging to the genus Pneumovirus within the family of Paramyxoviridae. RSV virions contain three glycoproteins, F, G, and SH. RSV is a common respiratory virus that infects the nose, throat, and lungs. It is classified into two subgroups, RSV-A and RSV-B, defined by antigenic differences in the G glycoprotein. The subgroups typically co-circulate annually. The RSV F fusion glycoprotein in the prefusion conformation is a major target of virus-neutralizing antibodies. RSV infection offers only limited immune protection against reinfection; hence, repeat infections may occur throughout life. Since the release of RSV vaccines in Europe in 2023, several countries have published vaccination recommendations for adults and opted for different minimum age eligibility for administration. Decisions by the different countries are informed by their population age structure and national/regional disease burden data.
