Evidence of implicit bias among healthcare professionals and its impact on health equity is a significant concern. Implicit biases influence assessments and decisions regarding patient care and provider–patient communication, resulting in unequal treatment and outcomes. It is becoming increasingly common for academic and healthcare organizations to implement implicit bias education. This education aims to prepare healthcare providers with the skills to recognize, acknowledge, and address biases in their interactions with patients. Simulation-based education (SBE) provides an immersive learning experience to explore and address biases, identify healthcare system discrimination, and advocate for health equity. However, there are inherent challenges with implicit bias education. This chapter will review these challenges, discuss considerations specific to implicit bias scenario design following the Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice™ Simulation Design, and review the Keyser–Gilbert framework. This conceptual framework has been developed to scaffold scenario design for SBE addressing implicit bias.
