The lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other gender-diverse and sexual orientation minority (LGBTQ+) populations are growing. Yet for these patients, health disparities and poor health outcomes associated with their sexual orientation, gender identity, or both, persist. Healthcare professionals receive little to no initial and continuing education on inclusive communication and care. Unfortunately, this leaves space for biases and false information to negatively impact their attitudes and beliefs about the LGBTQ+ population, contributing to poor healthcare outcomes and poor patient perceptions related to their care. Healthcare simulation is a proven educational methodology that can be used to provide vital education to healthcare professionals on inclusive care for LGBTQ+ patients. The International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL) provides the simulation community with 11 criteria to meet the standard of best practice for simulation design for traditional medical simulation. With the addition of special considerations, LGBTQ+ simulation should also follow these same criteria. This chapter explores the development of LGBTQ+ simulation, potential barriers simulation facilitators may encounter, resources for effective LGBTQ+ simulation facilitation, and case examples of LGBTQ+ simulation activities.
