This chapter is the introduction to the book. It opens the field of discussion, delineating three fundamental challenges modern science is facing: (1) Its problematic epistemological foundations; (2) Its ambivalent role concerning the roots of the multiple crises of the so-called Anthropocene; (3) Scientific universalism and its historical role in the maintenance of a colonial geopolitics of knowledge that sustains structural inequalities. The second part of the introduction explains the structure of the book and provides a brief overview of the chapters.
