Spinning on Female Identity in the Iberian Culture
摘要
Indirectly written sources mention that Iberian textiles had their own festivity during the fifth century BC in which women were the protagonists. This activity, originally carried out for self-consumption, reached a high level of importance for Iberian Culture. Its importance lay in the quality of the textile products as well as in the techniques, their uses and functions as well as their economic weight, becoming one of the main handicraft production manufactures developed by these Iberian groups. Thus, the study and review of the archaeological remains, dwellings and iconography allow us to identify this work as one of the main tasks that define the female sphere and the identity of Iberian women. In turn, a detailed analysis allows for the differentiation of both prototypes of women (young-adolescent and adult-mature agents) and their social rank, the textile production, the type of resulting pieces and how they could be worn, its relevance from a socio-economic perspective and the similarities and differences with the attire and role in respect to other Mediterranean women. In short, a narrative developed from a gender-feminist reading of the textile as a basic piece for an adequate interpretation of the creation of the social Iberian women’s sphere.
