The need for peaceful and safer local communities has become a major challenge in Nigeria. Many local communities, particularly in the northern part of Nigeria, are experiencing increasing records of social unrest and insecurity caused by attacks from bandits, terrorists, killer herdsmen, and unknown gunmen, as some of them are often referred to. This is the sad scenario experienced in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area (LGA) located in Kaduna State, North-West, Nigeria. In many cultures and communities in Nigeria, including Birnin Gwari, tackling the security crisis is often seen as men’s sole responsibility without paying emphasis on what the women offer in ensuring a safer and peaceful environment. This chapter thus seeks to address the subject matter of insecurity in the community to analyze the instrumentality of Theatre for Development (TFD) as a method of advocating and demonstrating the vital roles women play in intervening in local community insecurity challenges. The TFD project to be examined in this chapter was facilitated by the Women Connect Initiative (WCI) in the Birnin Gwari community. As a way of foregrounding the discourse, an examination of the concept and role of TFD practice as a peacebuilding approach shall be given. From the analysis of the different stages in the Birnin Gwari TFD experience, the paper concludes that empowering women in tackling insecurity challenges is very instrumental and applicable in local communities as we seek to explore efforts from within in dealing with security crises hindering peace and progress.
