Considering the challenges posed by climate change, population growth, and the interconnected nature of food, energy, and water systems, this research examines the mounting complexities involved in achieving sustainable water resource management. Utilizing a dataset of 87,024 entries spanning from 1991 to 2024, the study applies the K-means clustering approach to categorize Mexican dams considering storage percentages, fluctuations in those levels, and recurring seasonal trends. The clustering results highlight considerable spatial and temporal variation in dam storage levels, revealing patterns that correspond with regional climatic events such as cyclones and droughts. For example, dams located in Mexico’s central-southern regions generally maintain higher storage levels due to frequent cyclonic activity. In contrast, those in central and northern areas often display reduced storage levels, particularly during drought-affected years. This chapter offers valuable insights into sustainable water management efforts and presents a distinctive analytical approach to understanding dam storage behavior through clustering techniques.

摘要
