Turning the Tide: Leveraging Lantana camara for Sustainable Environmental Applications
摘要
Lantana camara is considered a noxious weed and is oftentimes stigmatized in literature and media. The real or perceived stigma surrounding Lantana camara could cloud the real opportunity for bioprospecting it provides. While much of the previous research about Lantana camara has focused on its negative impacts on the environment, this chapter identifies the major secondary metabolite diversity, terpenoids, flavonoids, and alkaloids of Lantana camara and showcases its previously documented biological activities that are potentially valuable to foster ecological solutions. The chapter further explores specific environmental applications, such as phytoremediation of heavy metals and organic pollutants, development of eco-friendly bioherbicides and biopesticides, and as an input in bioenergy and composting. Selected case studies from around the world are included, illustrating ongoing research, innovative applications, and pragmatic uses of Lantana camara to encourage sustainable environmental management. This chapter argues for a shift in how researchers and practitioners view Lantana camara and for a pivot away from it being a “problem species” to bioprospecting opportunity for novel and green technologies.
