The main intention of this paper is to provide an overview of the current situation in Iran, which is marred by a series of crises that have collectively had a structural impact on the country. These crises have undermined economic growth prospects, exacerbating social movements, leading to a series of protests violently repressed by the regime, and have consequently influenced political conduct at both domestic and international levels. After identifying Iran’s stance within the broader international political context, the paper proceeds to analyse the first of the catalytic elements underlying Iran’s situation of polycrisis, with a study of the country’s healthcare system and how it has dealt with the Coronavirus pandemic emergency. The health crisis has been viewed and correlated with the deterioration of international relations, following the United States’ unilateral withdrawal from the nuclear agreement and the subsequent impact that this had on the national economy. These are the principal factors that have exacerbated the social crisis and triggered street protests. Based on these consequences, the country’s future will depend largely on the outcome of complex decisions in the short term that will force the Iranian establishment to ‘elect’ a new supreme leader, the true centre of power within the entire national system.

摘要
