In April 1983, I became a research assistant at the Sociology Lab in the Faculty of Letters at the University of Tokyo. I was lucky to be able to become a research assistant after only one year of postdoctoral studies. At that time, research assistants at national universities were national civil servants. I finally graduated from being a student for 22 years, from elementary school through 6th, 3rd, 3rd, 4th, and sixth years. My 55-year-old parents were finally free to send me money. At the time, the term of a research assistant at the Sociology Lab was 5 years. I just had to get another full-time job within that 5 years.
