Music Training in Children: Impact on Speech Perception in Noise, Working Memory and Attention Abilities

Music training improves auditory processing abilities due to neuroplastic changes along the central auditory pathway. Speech-in-noise perception, an auditory processing skill, is critical for distinguishing target signals amidst background noise. Music training has been known to augment the auditory system by enhancing shared auditory resources. Sixty children in the age range of 10 to 15 years were included. Group 1 had 30 typically developing children, and Group 2 had 30 children undergoing music training. The speech perception in noise ability was assessed using the speech perception in noise test in Indian English. Working memory was assessed using the auditory digit span (forward and backward), reading span, and operation span tasks using the Smriti-Shravan 3.0 software. Attention was evaluated with the colour cancellation test. The Mann-Whitney U test revealed a significant difference between the children with no formal music training and those with music training for speech perception in noise and attention abilities. The children with music training had better scores on the reading span task, but the difference between the scores of the two groups was not statistically significant. No significant difference between the two groups was obtained for the working memory tests (forward digit span, backward digit span and operation span). The study highlights the importance of music training in strengthening children’s auditory processing and attention abilities.
