Does the Transformation of Stop Consonants Affect the Intelligibility of Speech of Individuals with Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorders?—A Preliminary Study

Individuals with Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder (ANSD) experience notable challenges in understanding speech due to disrupted timing-related cues and temporal processing issues. Difficulty perceiving these temporal cues affects speech understanding, even though modifications in speech acoustics, such as companding, stretching, and deep band modulation, have shown improvement in speech perception for those with ANSD. Speech transformation techniques, which involve manipulating specific acoustic and temporal parameters independently, are used to investigate and address speech production errors in people with hearing loss. The study aims to (1) document temporal parameter differences between ANSD and normal-hearing individuals and (2) assess how transformed speech impacts intelligibility, acceptability, and word identification. Forty participants aged 15–30 were divided into two groups: 20 with normal hearing (Group 1) and 20 with late-onset ANSD without structural impairments (Group 2). The test materials consisted of 24 bisyllabic Kannada words featuring unaspirated stops (/p/, /b/, /t/, /d/, /k/, and /g/). Using Praat software, temporal features such as burst duration, closure duration, and VOT were analysed and adjusted in ANSD speech samples. Statistical analyses evaluated the effects of these adjustments on speech intelligibility and acceptability. ANSD participants exhibited longer VOT, closure, and burst durations compared to normal hearing counterparts. The transformed speech samples for ANSD participants demonstrated higher speech acceptability and word identification scores, supporting the hypothesis that temporal processing deficits affect speech perception in ANSD. Temporal parameter adjustments may improve speech perception, with implications for speech enhancement strategies for ANSD individuals.
