This chapter critically assesses the current position of evolutionary economics, identifying both its potential and its persistent challenges. While the field offers powerful tools for understanding economic transformation, it faces critique on grounds of causal ambiguity, inconsistent terminology, and limited empirical formalization. We suggest that many of these issues can be addressed through a layered research architecture—integrating foundational theory, modeling methods, and observed outcomes. This three-layer approach, introduced earlier in the book, provides a coherent framework for clarifying definitions, improving methodological rigor, and aligning research across disciplines. Through methodological integration, interdisciplinary dialogue, and advances in simulation and data science, evolutionary economics can move from a marginal position to a central role in guiding adaptive policy, innovation, and institutional design.
