This chapter explores spiritual brotherhood ceremonies, known in Russian as bratotvorenie("brother-making"). Rites of bratotvorenieappeared in East Slavonic church books starting in the eleventh century, but they were banned in Kyiv in 1646 and shortly afterwards in Moscow. This chapter highlights queer elements in the rites that seem to have triggered their eventual ban. It also points to the broader cultural resonance of bratotvorenie, especially its influence on monasticism and its cultural association with marriage.
