This chapter looks at how the institution of marriage was conceptualised and controlled in early modern Russia, particularly its ritualisation in church rites and regulation in canon law. It highlights moments of ambiguity and instability in how the Church conceived of and managed marriage, revealing that its meaning was not set in stone in the early modern period; legally, theologically, and least of all sexually.
