This chapter examines how participants’ self-conceptions and expressions are influenced by their interactions with various social actors across different contexts. Adopting a social constructionist perspective, it argues that participants’ identities are fluid, multifaceted, and contingent, rather than fixed or static. The chapter is divided into two sections. The first section investigates how research participants interpret the categories ‘hijra’ and ‘transgender,’ focusing on three key parameters: embodiment, spirituality, and communal affiliation. The second section explores how they navigate these categories in different social settings.
