ScientISST CORE: A Novel Hardware Platform for Rapid Prototyping in Biomedical Engineering

This chapter presents a broad characterization of the ScientISST CORE, a novel low-cost hardware architecture especially designed for biosignal acquisition, with a custom-built firmware optimized for real-time data acquisition and streaming. Comparatively to other physiological sensing devices in the state of the art, ScientISST CORE has improved technical specifications to deal with the stringent requirements of biosignal acquisition and comes with an ecosystem of tools, open-source software, and APIs for seamless use, without requiring extensive knowledge of electronics or programming. Performance tests are summarized for the temporal precision of signal acquisition and reliability of data transmission using different communication modes. Overall, the results presented here show no data loss during communication, as well as accurate sampling rates for all tested conditions, with several metrics extracted from the acquired signals showing a marked improvement when compared to past tests.
