As the usage of electric vehicle (EV) batteries continues to escalate globally, concerns regarding the management and disposal of these batteries post their active service life are gaining significant attention. These batteries, pivotal in powering electric vehicles, eventually reach a point where their efficiency declines, no longer making them suitable for transport functions. This juncture raises concerns about the most effective and environmentally responsible ways to handle these used batteries. In the article, an in-depth examination of global trends in managing post-use EV batteries reveals essential strategies for their sustainable handling. The analysis underscores two primary approaches: repurposing for secondary applications and recycling for material recovery. The study highlights the potential of repurposing EV batteries in applications like stationary energy storage, which extends their lifecycle and mitigates electronic waste. This approach is particularly beneficial in storing energy from renewable sources and supporting sustainable energy infrastructures. Furthermore, the article emphasises the significance of recycling EV batteries. Efficient recycling processes enable the extraction of valuable materials such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel, conserving resources and reducing the environmental impact of raw material extraction. The findings suggest a combined strategy of repurposing and recycling as an optimal solution for managing post-use EV batteries. This approach aligns with circular economy principles, ensuring environmentally responsible and economically viable battery lifecycle management. The article concludes that developing suitable technologies, infrastructures, and regulations is crucial for enabling this sustainable management strategy, effectively addressing the challenge of post-use EV batteries.
