Role of Phytocompounds: Synergism Between Nanomaterial and Medicinal Plants

Phytocompounds are the agents that are derived from plants and exhibit diverse, noteworthy therapeutic potential. The demand for these natural agents is surging at an alarming rate owing to their manifold advantages that render them as effective agents against various diseases. The phytochemicals act as promising anticancer, antioxidant, antimicrobial agents, and so on. However, these phytocompounds pose various limitations, including low absorption, poor bioavailability, and enhanced toxicity that further hinder their clinical translation. These limitations can be overcome by the application of nanotechnology, which is an emerging field and has further opened new avenues in herbal agents delivery. The integration of phytomolecule with the novel nanotechnology further assists in generating synergistic effect resulting in elevated biological activity and sustained drug delivery. Recently, phytocompounds have garnered immense interest in delivery of anticancer agents, which improves their pharmacokinetic profile consequently enhancing the therapeutic action. In this chapter, we have shed light on the phytocompounds and their importance. Additionally, various types of anticancer phytocompounds, their role in cancer, and phytonanomedicines that are approved by the FDA or are in preclinical and clinical trials are also discussed.
