Spectroscopic Detection of Microplastics from Paper and Plastic Cups Using Ftir

Microplastics have been established as a major environmental and health concern due to their widespread distribution in ecosystems and potential hazards for human health. This paper discusses the release of microplastics from disposable paper cups, which are commonly used to serve hot beverages, through Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Our results show that when hot liquids are poured into the cups, which are normally coated with polyethylene (PE), microplastic particles are released. FTIR analysis confirmed the existence of microplastics in all the tested samples with polyethylene as the major polymer identified. The findings bring out the health risk involved with the constant use of disposable paper cups because microplastics easily dissolve in drinks, hence, putting the consumer at risk. This calls for a need to standardize the detection method and put up stiffer regulations that control the extent of microplastic pollution. Lastly, findings would critically inform in the area of microplastics, with a great need to have sustainable alternatives of polyethylene-coated disposable products.
