Abstract in English The chapter offers a philosophical investigation of the agro-epistemicide which refers to the systematic killing of Indigenous agricultural knowledge systems and especially of Indigenous seed systems through agricultural modernisation in Africa. Agro-epistemicide leads to the introduction of alien—i.e. hybrid and genetically modified [GM]—seed systems whose food crops are touted to be more productive, more disease- and pest-resistant, and more drought-tolerant, among other alleged advantages. It argues that the invasion and subsequent colonisation of the seed market by Western seed manufacturers and distributors has led to the slow death or extinction of Indigenous seed systems in Africa. Major problems arising from the wholesale adoption of hybrid and GM seed systems in Africa include: (1) peasant and small-scale farmers’ perpetual dependency on seed manufacturers and distributors who are profit-driven capitalists. It argues that these problems have led to the loss of food security as well as food sovereignty in Africa; (2) GM contamination, and hence destruction, of Africa’s biodiversity. We argue that these and other problems are reflective of (1) the uncritical assimilation of Western knowledge systems and practices in Africa, (2) problematic adoption of the capitalist philosophy in African nations.
