Saving Orwell Twice (1936–1938)
摘要
Following Orwell’s decision to leave for Spain, this chapter begins by showing Eileen handling the final stages of the publication of Road to Wigan Pier. She then follows him to Barcelona and the couple are caught up in the drama and excitement of the war. Eileen’s letters from Barcelona at this time reflect this mixture of fear and excitement. In Barcelona, Eileen develops a close relationship with Georges Kopp, who becomes part of the narrative this book tells. When Orwell is injured, Eileen is on hand to help nurse him back to health, helped by advice from her brother. She is also there when the schism in the anti-Fascist ranks proves dangerous to those around her, and orchestrates Orwell’s escape from Spain. Once back in England, Eileen’s help in writing Homage to Catalonia is invaluable, as the original notes and drafts have been left in Barcelona. The chapter ends with yet more drama, as Eileen is once more called upon to save his life when he suffers a massive tubercular haemorrhage.
