This chapter argues that the activism in Turkish foreign policy under the leadership of Recept Tayyip Erdoğan can be identified as following an idiosyncratic ideational liberal pattern. According to Andrew Moravcsik, domestic social identities and values are the most important determinants of state preferences. In line with Ideational Liberal theorizing, the concept and the condition of modernity as it has evolved and acquired a new multifaceted meaning under the procurement of Islamic values and collective Ottomanist self-images with the AKP advent to power are discussed. As a case study, the foreign policy of AKP in Syria in the 2010s is discussed.
