This chapter surveys prominent variational quantum algorithms—including the variational quantum eigensolver, quantum approximate optimization algorithm, and variational quantum linear solver—and discusses their applications in quantum chemistry, combinatorial optimization, and linear algebra. The theoretical foundations of the quantum approximate optimization algorithm are presented, and example implementations of the variational quantum eigensolver and quantum approximate optimization algorithm are provided.
