Forensic Psychologists work across a variety of settings, including His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS), hospitals, courts and secure children’s homes. Their main roles are to risk assess, formulate explanations for offending behaviour and provide rehabilitative interventions for people engaging in harmful behaviours. Risk assessment refers to evaluating the chance that a person will commit a further offence, whereas case formulation refers to the development and testing of a hypothesis about a person’s problems to inform the treatment of these problems. This chapter will discuss risk assessment, case formulation and elaborate on practitioner considerations when completing these activities within forensic settings in the United Kingdom.
