Small regulatory RNAs are key to bacterial stress responses. The regulatory functions of small RNAs are exerted by base-pairing with mRNA targets, affecting the translation and stability of these targets. Small RNAs and their protein partners have been identified in a range of bacteria. This chapter summarizes a well-characterized class of small regulatory RNAs that bind to the partner protein Hfq, and discusses the commonalities and diversities among RNA/Hfq-mediated gene regulation.

Small regulatory RNAs are key to bacterial stress responses.
