The vagus nerve is a mixed nerve that has multiple visceral connections, also participating in gustatory, efferent motor, and secretory sensory activities at different levels of the body. It also has multiple connections and anastomoses with various cranial nerves and cervical levels that make its area of influence much larger. The study of the vagus nerve has become very relevant, especially during the past two decades, after the emergence of the inflammatory reflex theory. In this theory, non-classical functions are revealed, such as the modulatory action on inflammation, on the immune system, on endocrine ones, and, therefore, on pain of those acute or chronic pathologies whose underlying mechanism is inflammation. In this chapter, a new technique for accessing the vagus nerve via the transpharyngeal route is described. Also, a study within the dissection theater was developed at the National University of Colombia, where a methylene blue test was performed to verify access to the carotid sheath and, consequently, to the vagus nerve in the dissected cadaver. The technique, its applications and its precautions are described.
