Social and Ecological Sustainability of Land Improvement and Soil Use in the Japanese Agricultural Sector: Focusing on Gender Equality and Biodiversity
摘要
The productivity of the soil in Japanese farmlands are managed and maintained by community-based Land Improvement Districts through ‘Land Improvement Projects’ scheme; however, their sustainability is in question. Land Improvement Districts face structural change in traditional farming practices, communities, and households. Land Improvement Projects may cause impairments to the biodiversity and rural ecology in pursuing productivity through modern rural engineering. This chapter provides insight to these issues and suggests countermeasures to secure sustainability. In particular, the chapter discusses facilitating gender equality in the Land Improvement Districts and ecologically sound practices for the Land Improvement Projects.
