This chapter deal deals with the fundamental material properties of glass and polymers, that often used in glass engineering. After a general introduction in Sect. 1.1, the physical nature of glass, including its molecular structure and thermodynamics, is discussed in Sect. 1.2. From there onwards, the focus is on glass used in the building industry; Sects. 1.3 and 1.4 discuss its chemical composition and its main properties, respectively. Finally, Sects. 1.5 and 1.6 describe the polymers that are frequently used in conjunction with glass with a focus on their salient properties and testing methods.
