Restrained eating refers to the intention to restrict food intake deliberately in order to prevent weight gain or to promote weight loss. Research on restrained eating started in the 1970s and, thus, it now encompasses about 50 years of investigation. This chapter provides a brief overview of the historical development of the concept, describes the most commonly used measures for the assessment of restrained eating, and reviews cross-cultural differences in dietary restraint.
