I describe how I came to develop one of the nation’s first migratory landbird monitoring programs, and how that program allowed me to gather data on bird communities in all kinds of vegetation types. Those data exposed strong associations between some bird species and burned forests. More specifically, the Black-backed Woodpecker was found to be nearly restricted in its distribution to recently burned forests.
