Prior to inoculation, sterile medium and sterile (parts of) equipment coming into contact therewith must be guaranteed; subsequent handling will require quantitative exclusion of unwanted or contaminating microorganisms, via implementation of aseptic techniques. Sterilization implies full destruction of all microorganisms, in both vegetative and spore forms—at the expense of heat, chemicals, radiation, or filtration.
