Concerns about boys’ underachievement in literacy – specifically reading and writing – have been a key focus of education for more than two decades. Solutions aimed at improving literacy outcomes for boys and young men (BYM) commonly reflect essentialist ideas about gender. From a critical perspective, we highlight the problems of past approaches to remedy the ‘boy problem’ and why masculine identities have been constructed in opposition to literacies. Then we explore how digital technologies are transforming literacies and relationships between boyhood, digital communication, and experiences of schooling for BYM.
