Dementia affects the person’s cognitive abilities resulting in neurological impairment. Neurological impairment is a term used to describe disorders that affect the brain, the spinal cord and muscles, leading to general deterioration. The brain, which is the most affected, is a unique organ with over 100 billion cells that enable individuals to function effectively. Each of these cells, known as neurons, form a network of communication systems that enable a person to interpret not only the world around them, but also to control their emotions and feelings, as well as coordinating themselves. In a person living with dementia, these networks of communication are affected, leading to the deterioration in the brain, which can be gradual or sudden. In each case, it affects the person’s behaviour, ability to communicate and undertake some of the more fundamental and basic aspects of life. This chapter examines the experience of people with dementia and the impact dementia can have on their everyday life skills.
