Activities are one of the most important aspects within care settings, and if done effectively can enhance the well-being of people living with dementia. Care workers need to promote and maintain a supportive environment that enables people living with dementia to utilise their skills and abilities. However, the subjective nature in which the term activity is interpreted by many organisations leads to variations in the manner in which this is implemented. This chapter explores some of the key issues in relation to providing activities within dementia care settings. Evidence suggests that activities can reduce behaviours that challenge and depression. For people living with dementia, it is about being supported in an environment that enables them to gain a sense of belonging, whilst for care workers, the focus should be on providing person-centred activities that promote well-being.
