Person-centred care and its significance to health and social care is widely cited within research and evidence-based practice. Whilst there is a plethora of theories and models on person-centred care in dementia, Kitwood’s theory remains with much greater authority over others and central to many emerging person-centred theories and models, as such his work is far referred to in dementia care. Key phrases such as ‘person-centred care,’ ‘person-centred care planning’, ‘person led’ and ‘personalisation’ have been used within dementia care, mental health, learning disabilities, end of life and older people services. Today, person-centred care or person led is used within health and social care organisations, and is one of the main theories governing these organisations. This chapter will examine the theory of person-centred care, the principle of personhood and the key attributes of what constitutes personhood and its significance to practice.
