Respecting older people and providing care for them are the requirements of filial piety and the foundation of family bonds in Chinese families. With dramatic changes in family size as well as social changes, the traditional family care for older adults is no longer sufficient or efficient enough. Institutional care is a poor substitute for family care because it is still, to some extent, stigmatized as a choice made by unfilial children, and it is also considered an expensive choice. A third option, community eldercare, is increasingly becoming the principal approach to providing care for older adults, allowing them to age in place and maintain their connections with their family and neighborhoods.
