This chapter addresses a series of methodological issues related to measuring MLA from two theoretical perspectives, one that comes from developmental psycholinguistics and the other from applied linguistics, in particular from second language acquisition (SLA) studies. Adopting one or the other perspective has methodological consequences for the designs that give sense to measuring MLA, in terms of objectives, ages, and tools. While developmental researchers are interested in mechanisms and factors of development, and thus target the earliest to the most mature forms of MLA, researchers in SLA address learning mechanisms and factors, and target learners from school age onward to measure the role of MLA in language learning, either as a prerequisite or a possible effect. After these preliminary conceptual clarifications, we present a range of validated metalinguistic tests, covering from preschool age to mature adulthood.

摘要
