Industrial control systems (ICS) are the backbone of the world’s modern infrastructure and are used to power manufacturing, critical infrastructure, including utilities and building systems. They combine sensors, control, connectivity, and human interface to automate, monitor, and adjust industrial processes. This chapter analyzes the basic elements of ICS, its use in multiple sectors, and, especially, the particular aspects of their requisite safe, secure, and efficient operation, which have a tangible effect in the real world.
